AUSTRALIAN FORCES
COMPULSORY TRAINING MEASURE IN JANUARY CONSCRIPTION DENIED (Reed. Nov. 16, 9'a.m.) CANBERRA. Nov. 15. In the course of a speech on the Commonwealth’s air policy in the House of Representatives, the Prime Minister, Mr. R. G. Menzies, again emphasised that there was no intention of introducing conscription for overseas service. “We are definitely pledged against it, but for many years the law has imposed upon all citizens of a certain age the obligation to serve Australia in time of war,” said Mr. Menzies. He added: “We have decided to keep the military forces at an adequately trained strength, not less than 75,000, for which compulsory military training will be introduced in January.
“The reason for which we entered the war will not be lightly abandoned. The freedom and equity for which we are fighting will be freedom and equity for the Germans as well as ourselves.”
