A conversation between an old Wellington identity and a young new chum' on the Auckland-Whangarei train the other morning was listened to with interest by sundry other passengers. Tlie new chum said how surprised lie had been to find so many tilings in every-day demand were being produced within the Dominion. "Yes,” said the older traveller, "and I can remember when almost everything had to lie imported. Nowadays we manufacture not only all the necessaries of life but some of its luxuries as well. Why the tobacco I’m now smoking is New Zealand grown and manufactured, It’s toasted, and as good as any tobacco you can buy in London Itself. Not only is the flavour delicious and the bouquet exceptional, but in toasting it the manufacturers have discovered how to rid it of its nicotine. That’s why it’s safe for even the heaviest smoker.” Reference was made to the five popular brands of New Zealand toasted tobacco, Navy Cut No. 3 (Bulldog), Cavendish, Kiverhead Gold, Desert Gold, and Cut Plug No. 10 (Bullshead). These tobaccos are now in almost everybody’s pipe.* 9 -
