PILLAR OF SAND
A sudden whirlwind on the bank of the Manawatu River at Foxton drew into the air what must have been tons of sand and bore its aloft to an estimated height of several hundred feet. The phenomenon resembled a stone pillar and remained in that form for some minutes. It then commenced to spread out over a wide area and fall.
