OPPONENT FOR LOUIS
26-YEAR-OLD CHILEAN
Arturo Godoy, the 26-year-old Chilean, who has been matched with Joe Louis for the world heavyweight title in January, is regarded as the greatest heavy-weight lighter produced bv South. America—greater even than the “Wild Bull of the Pampas,” Luis Firpo, who almost took tiie crown from Jack Dempsey, slates an American writer.
This claim, and the impressive record of Godoy, indicates that the new challenger will not prove another “sacrifice” for Louis, and may even give him his toughest opposition since he won the championship. Godoy appears to have gained his chance against Louis on the strength of his match against Tony Galento. The Chilean lias outpointed Galento in their two meetings—over ten rounds in the New York Hippodrome in April, 1937, and over six rounds at Chicago in June of the same year. The latter contest was a preliminary to the championship lght in which Louis won the title from Jim Braddock.
