The rates are being raised from 3s j to 4s a week i'or the second child and 1 from 2s to 3s weekly for each subsequent child. On the present figures, the changes are expected to add some £2,000,000 to the existing annual expenditure of about £10,000,000 on children’s allowances in the three defence services. The concession has been made in! response to representations in recent j debates in the' House of Commons j that hardship is being experienced by; the families ol' the men in the three services, especially where the rents! are high.
