INCREASE TEMPORARY

WORKLESS IN BRITAIN | EFFECT OF CHANGE-OVER 1 WAR DEMAND LIKELY ‘ (British Official Wireless.) Reed. 9 a.m. ' RUGBY, Nov. 13. A temporary increase in unemployment revealed in the recent Ministry of Labour returns was the inevitable result of the change-over from peace to war conditions, but it was pointed out by the Minister of Labour, Mr, Ernest Brown, that the increase was smaller than in 1914, notwithstanding the fact that the change-over was more rapid on this occasion and the total population between the ages of 16 and 6'4 is now 5,500,000 larger than in 1914.

A rapid rise in the demand for labour for war purposes is expected shortly.

The development in times of peace of the free organisation of employers and work people, whose co-operation since the outbreak of war has been one of the most striking manifestations of national unity, ensures that the demand will be satisfied smoothly.
