TOTANGI DRILLING BORE REACHES 5685 FT. BLENHEIM WELL BEATEN NO FORMATION CHANGE The fortnightly bulletin of the New Zealand Petroleum Company, Limited, issued in respect of operations on the Totangi Dome, Ngatapa, states:—
“Totangi No. 1 has reached a depth of 5685 ft. The formation penetrated is unchanged. Casing of 6§in. diameter has been set to 4824 ft,”
The bulletin is notable for the fact that it records a depth greater than has been reached before in the history of drilling in New Zealand. The record was previously held by the Blenheim well, one of the Taranaki ventures of pre-war years, which in 1912 reached a depth of 5680 ft. The Blenheim well proved dry.
No information is available yet regarding the date on which operations will be suspended at Totangi. The change of location to a site at Morere has been foreshadowed by announcements on the part of the Minister of Mines, the Hon. P. C. Webb, and in the promotion literature of companies associated with New Zealand Petroleum, Limited, but so far the drilling company's directors have made no statement respecting the change.
