COOK COUNTY WORK
FAVOURABLE WEATHER REPORT BY ENGINEER "The past month has been a very busy one and the weather generally has" been excellent, with the result that the roads at present. arc in firstcloss order," reported the county engineer. Mr. K. F. Jor.cs. to the Cook County Council meeting to-day. Ilis report added:
“Highways. —Messrs. W. S. Goosmaii and Company have made excellent progress with their reconstruction contracts, and one-coat seals have been applied to both the Patu-tahi-Rere and Gisborne-Ormond, via Waiohika, main highways. The second coats will be applied at an early date. “Public Works Department Grants.
Good progress also has been made of Brunton’s and Riverside roads reconstructions, where seal coats are being provided out ol county funds. The work on Brunton’s road has been completed and Riverside road will be finished at an early date. Most of the other work under the grants has been expedited, but in one or two instances work is held up awaiting the authority. This applied particularly on the Wnimala-Arakihi and ITangaron-Wai-karemoana roads. As soon as these authorities are 'received, the work will be moved along as rapidly as possible. “Bridges.— A number ol small bridges which are in a dangerous state arc in the process of being replaced by large sized concrete pipes Houses tor Surfacemen
“Housing.—lnspections were made of the proposed locations of single men’s accommodation on the Manutuke Valley road. An arrangement was reached with Mr. 11. R. Shanks for a suitable area to replace the whare at present occupied by the surfaceman, Mr. .1. Hegarty. No agreement was reached with Mr. B. Shanks [or the proposed location of a new cottage to replace the existing tent accommodation occupied by another surfaceman, Mr. W. Bilski. It is suggested that the housing committee make an inspection of this locality at an early date. It is suggested also that an inspection be made of the proposal in connection with Mr. J. Gillwren’s accommodation at Waimata. “Plantations. —No finality has been reached with regard to next year’s requirements for plantation work. It is honed to have the matter decided at nil early date and arrangements made for next year's planting. “To Arai Stream Clearing—lt is proposed to call a public meeting at an early date in connection with the clearing of this stream, which should be useful work for those employed on No. 13 scheme. It is hoped to receive some assistance from the Public Works Department in connection with the provision of equipment for dealing with the very big trees which require removing lrom this stieam.
