COOK COUNTY COUNCIL
HANGAROA HIGHWAY DIVERSION OF GRANT LAND FOR CEMETERY The Cook County Council met today, there being present Crs. W. G Sherratt, chairman, P. D. Tornbleson F. S. Bowen, H. G. Smith, E. 11, Baker, M. T. B. Hall, C. Tictjen, J E. Benson, G. V. Smith, J. T. Gordon and M. L. Holden.
The Tinirolo branch of the W.D.F.U. forwarded a copy of a resolution making an appeal for the bridging of the Hangaroa River, thus doing away with the necessity of using the dangerous road round the Hangaroa bluff. The chairman remarked that the matter was one for consideration ol the Main Highways Board. Previously the council had urged that the work should be done.
It was agreed to send a copy o! the letter to the board. The Minister of Public* Works, the lion. R. Semple, wrote amending tne present authority on Puatai road to one of £4OO, £2 for £1. —The chairman said that the settlers were not prepared to find the £2OO necessary, out, it' was suggested that the grant be transferred to the Tokanui-Tarewa road.'.lt was decided to make application for the transfer of the grant:
An offer was received from the Public Trustee, Gisborne, of 18 acre: of land in Stout street adjoining the Taruheru cemetery for cemetery purposes at £630. —The finance committee was deputed to meet borough representatives regarding the purchase of the land.
Messrs. J. Bradford, T. Dennis, P. Eparaima, 11. Eparaima and W. Beecham, Manutuke, wrote asking the council to put a drain through their area. All but two in the area had signed the request.—The matter was referred to Cr. Bowen and the county engineer, who were asked to report to the next meeting Classification of Roads The Poverty Bay and East Coast Sheepowners’ Union wrote on bena,. of the Farmers’ Union and Farmers association, asking that the county engineer, Mr. K. F. Jones, should classify the roads in the Uawa County, in the same manner as he had those in the Cook County, for the purpose of providing a basis loi transport rates in the district. Mr. Jones was asked to secure os much information as possible.—The council agreed to permit Mr. Jones to do the work in his own time. Mr. F. R. Bould, inspector ol noxious weeds, Gisborne, wrote drawing tne council’s attention to the spread of barberry on the council’s property at Waimata and the necessity for having all hedges trimmed and spreading oar Derry rooted out The letter was referred to the engineer tor attention Mr. H. G. Turley, noxious weeds inspector for the Gisborne norougn council, drew attention to complaints of thistle on the roadside in Queen and Tyndall roads, which are under the County Council jurisdiction.—The matter was reierred to tne county inspector. The county ranger, Mr. E. A. Cameron, asked that the fence at the oottom end of the road leading to Hardy’s crossing be removed—The matter was reierred lo Cr. lietjen. The county ranger reported having seized 130 head ot cattle lor impounding during the month ended, lNovemoer 11. Uawa Access The Uawa County Council wrote suggesting that the Cook council should ' contribute £75 towards the restoration of the road leading to section 2, block VIII, Uawa S.D., ant. Black’s road. A public works grant of £450, £3 for £l, had been provided. The finance committee reported that it had discussed the matter, and it wa. decided that £25, suggested by the council as its share to the work, could be found this financial year. The committee, therefore, recommended to the council that the Uawa County Council be informed that the Cook County would provide £25 toward.-, the flood restoration work and confirm the previous statement that the council would do maintenance on the Cook County section of the road with its own surfacemen. The report was adopted.
