TAXI AMALGAMATION
The motion to rescind the previous resolution-was defeated on the voices.
GISBORNE MOVEMENT BY-LAW REVISION URGED OPERATION FROM STANDS As a result of (lie amalgamation of three taxi fleets in Gisborne and an attempt to secure the co-operation of all in this respect, a request came before the Gisborne Borough Council last night for the revision of the borough by-laws to allow the operation of any taxi from any stand, in lieu of the present provision for specific taxis to operate from specific stands.,
The council referred the matter to the works committee Cor discussion with the Taxi Proprietors’ Association. "Recently, at the request of the Minister of Transport, the taxi proprietors operating in Gisborne have been endeavouring to formulate a scheme for the amalgamation of all proprietors,” wrote Messrs. Brosnahan and Chrisp. “At present two operators and Mr. Gardner have been able to reach an agreement as to the basis to be adopted and these people have formed a company covering nine of the 17 taxi cars carrying on business in Gisborne. These cars are at present all operating from the stand at Peel street and Mr. Gardner’s premises in Gladstone road. The remaining taxi proprietors are at present considering the basis already agreed upon. Regular Hours “This amalgamation is raising several difficulties, which in view of the desire expressed by the Minister it is hoped may be overcome. One of these difficulties arises out of the bylaw of your council which lays it down that specific cars must operate from specific stands. On an amalgamation in order to effect the greatest economy and to ensure an adequate check being kept, it is necessary for each driver to operate one particular car, and it is apparent that the above by-law will make the smooth running of the amalgamation concern more difficult. For instance, one of the objects of the amalgamation is to ensure that drivers have more regular hours and regular days off and proper 1 holidays. When, therefore, the drivers have time off under the proposed scheme, instead of there being four cars stationed in Peel street there may be only two.
“Further, in order to render the greatest service to the public, it is desired, as far as practicable, that the running of the licet be so organised as to enable four cars always to be stationed upon the Peel street stand. “If it were possible to amend the by-law to allow another car to take the place of the one going off duty, the difficulty would be so overcome.” The matter was referred to the works committee to meet the Taxi Proprietors’ Association.
