CONSCRIPTION IN N.Z. HIGHER WAGES SOUGHT MINISTER’S REPLY (Per'Press Association.) WELLINGTON, this day. Opposition to the introduction of conscription • was expressed by a deputation from the New Zealand Labourers’ Federation to Cabinet Ministers yesterday. The deputation also sought periodical increases in wages to enable the workers to keep up with the increased cost of living. Replying, the Minister of Defence, the Hon, F. Jones, said that at the moment the spontaneous response to the appeal for voluntary enlistment precluded any contemplation of the introduction of conscription.

On the question of the cost of living, the Minister of Finance, the Hon. W. Nash, submitted figures to show that while the cost of living had increased, wages had increased simultaneously. He claimed there was a margin in favour of wages.
