WRECK OF U-BOAT
OCEAN-GOING TYPE
INTEREST IN DESIGN
LONDON, Oct. 29. Given fine weather, every effort will be made to salvage the U-boat washed up on the Goodwin Sands, which a naval officer described as "considerably .bent.” The severe damage to the U-boat was apparently done by depth charges. Seamen knowing the coast intimately think that it was sunk between Dungeness and Dover, and that, because of its partial buoyancy, it drifted northward and grounded on the Goodwins.
Another theory is that it was sunk by gunfire, which was heard at Deal last Wednesday afternoon. If the report that 50 to (10 bodies have been recovered is correct, it proves the existence of a large oceangoing type of U-boat, which Germany, as recently as last March, informed Britain that she was not building. It is possible that this U-boat was carrying extra ratings for wartime training, which would indicate that the German Naval Command is taking enormous risks to hasten the supply of experienced men for submarine crews.
British naval experts will be interested to examine the U-boat’s construction and instruments.
