NATIONAL GOLF

FOURSOMES TITLE FIRST ROUND MATCHES TWO ROUNDS OF 70 GUY AND WEIR IN FORM (Per Press Association.) WELLINGTON, this day. Perfect conditions prevailed for the fourth day of the New Zealand golf championships at Miramar. The players welcomed the sunshine and the light southerly breeze after the boisterous northerly weather during the first two days.

To-day’s events, the amateur and professional championship foursomes, produced some brilliant play. The competitors are playing two rounds in both events.

One of the strongest amateur combinations, Hornabrook and Silk, could not better 77. Hornabrook played the better of the pair, but both were indifferent at times. They were lucky to get a four at the long tenth as Hornabrook’s drive hit the fence. They struck a bad patch at the thirteenth, where Silk’s tee shot found the ditch and Hornabrook had to pick out for a penalty. An excellent 74 was returned by “Pax” Smith and Glading, who both played steady golf. They took 37 both out and home. Holland, who performed creditably in the open and P. Quinn were also round in 74, to be among the leaders in the first round.

The holders of the professional foursomes title, Murray and Shaw, dovetailed perfectly for an outstanding round of 70. Both played consistently well in all departments of the game, their approach shots and putting being strong features. Murray had to sink a three-yard putt at the eighteenth to break 70, and only missed by the narrowest margin.

Guy and Weir finished with 70 to share the lead with Murray and Shaw. Accurate chipping and deadly putting contributed in no small measure to their sensational figure of 32 for the first nine holes. They took 38 coming back.
