RICCARTON TIMES
RECORD EQUALLED
T WO-Y EAR -O LD I'l ELDS
By "Trenton” The Riecarton track was exceptionally fast last Wednesday, and a following wind for the sprint events and for a good portion of the longer races helped towards the smart times recorded. The track records and the times recorded on Wednesday, in parentheses, arc as follow: —Five furlongs: 58sec\, Machine Gun (Absolve, 59sec.). Six furlongs: lmin. 9 2-sscc., Silver Scorn (Dark Flight, lmin. 9 2-ssec.). One mile: lmin. 37 2-ssec., Catalogue (Norseman, lmin. 37 2-5 sec.). One mile and a half: 2min. 30scc., Argentic (Royal Chief, 2min. 31 sec.). One mile and three-quarters over hurdles: 3min. lOsec., Pangolin (Jewish Lad. 3min. 10 l-sscc.).
Poor Acceptances
Commenting on the poor acceptances received in the two-year-old races at the Canterbury Jockey Club’s meeting, a southern writer says it is difficult to understand why this should be. Some of the handicapping in these events has been puzzling. Outside of the doubt whether Gold Flight (a filly) should have been asked to concede so much weight to Enrich (winner of the Wellesley Stakes), there is an inconsistency in the weights for the third and fourth days. Over live furlongs on Monday Enrich was allotted 8.0 and Atreus 8.5. neither accepting. Without therefore any further evidence of their form, Enrich was given 8.7 for Saturday and Atreus still 8.5. Then Absolve, for his win on Wednesday, was lifted 311 b. and Atreus for his win on Monday (at his first start) was lifted only Gib, though he was leaving his opposition at every stride over the closing portion of that four furlongs, which would point to five furlongs being equally as well within his compass. Going Well Ascot Bloom has been going well under H. Gray, and the Foxbridge— Curraghmorc gelding will be ready when required to make his debut. The improvement he has made during recent weeks suggests that he may not be long in earning distinction. Incidentally, Gray has had another recent addition to his team, in the shape of Norse Lady, who showed some promise when trained at Ellerslie lust season. To Kawiti Injured Te Kawili’s preparation lias been interrupted through ricking himself while running in the paddock, and while the trouble does not appear to be of a very serious nature, his connections decided to allow him to forego Avondale engagements. Up to the time of the mishap Tc Kawiti had been making excellent progress.
Paddy the Rip
Paddy the Rip is among the regular workers at Ellerslie, but he has not as yet been allotted any serious tasks. He did not do as well as expected in Australia, but his connections are hopeful that he will again return to the good form he showed last season. At his best, Paddy the Rip is a very capable galloper.

Canterbury Inquiries
Five judicial inquiries were held at Christchurch on Saturday. G. Elliott, rider of Chit Chat in the Suburban Handicap, was suspended from riding in races for two months for careless riding. It was found that Chit Chat crossed over too quickly on Phil, ridden by P. Burgess, after the Held had gone about a furlong. An inquiry was held into the riding of Strip by W. Connor in the Avon Handicap on the third day. After hearing evidence the committee decided that no further action be taken.
A. Messervy, rider of Dark Flight in the Members’ Handicap, was suspended for a month for crossing over too quickly to the rails, causing interference to Gay Parade about a furlong from the start. At the conclusion of the last race, M. Caddy, rider of Tint-o’-Tan, was given a warning for using his whip on Night Prince, ridden by R. Caddy, at the false rail. Interference suffered by Areas in the Seymour Handicap was the subject of an inquiry, and after hearing the evidence of several of the riders, it was decided that there was no direct evidence to show who had caused the trouble.
