Francis Leonard Laurie, aged 39. r. storeman, appeared in the Police Court before Mr, J. Molding, S.M., charged that on November 5 ho attempted to murder Josephine Norton Laycock.
In asking for a remand to November 27, Detective-Sergeant Trethewey said he was instructed to oppose bail should such be requested and pointed out that the accused was not bailable as of right.
“The circumstances leading to the arrest,” said Detective - Sergeant Trethewey, “are that the accused and the woman named in the charge booked at a hotel in the city on November 5 under the names of Mr. and Mrs. Laurie. The next morning the accused and the woman were found in a bedroom in a semi-con-scious condition, both bleeding freely from incised wounds on their left wrists. The woman was also .suffering from poisoning. The bottle that had contained the poison found in the room has been traced to Laurie’s possession.”
Detective-Sergeant Trethewey added that Laurie was arrested yesterday on his discharge from the hospital. The woman whose condition "was more serious than that of the accused was still in the hospital and her condition was not altogether favourable. Mr. F. McCarthy, who appeared for the accused, did not oppose the remand, which was granted.
