He was driving a train in the war zone when he saw three German aircraft shoot down a French plane, which fell in flames several hundred yards from the railway. M. Durckel brought the train to a standstill and ran to the plane. While the Germans flew low and machinegunned him, he dragged out and attended to the three members of the crew of the burning plane. He then drove his train away.
