INCREASED AREASS

RYEGRASS HARVEST GISBORNE PROSPECTS An increase in the area for the harvest of ryegrass seed in the Gisborne district is expected this season, but it is problematical whether the total crop will be any greater, in view of there being a heavier bottom growth of weeds, which will increase the dressing losses. The extent ol the crop, however, will depend a great deal on the weather up to the harvest time.

Market prospects appear encouraging, for the Gisborne crop will come on to a bare local market, for supplies from this district were sold very readily last season, when Poverty Bay seed had a great advantage in germination tests over that from the rest of the Dominion. The small carry-over in Gisborne was readily absorbed during the spring, although some stocks are reported to be held still in Hawke’s Bay. However, with a strong market, there should be little surplus by the time the new seed is available.
