THEFT OF SHEEP
MAORI FOUND GUILTY MERCY RECOMMENDED Guilty, with a very strong recommendation. for mercy, was the verdict returned this afternoon by the jury considering the evidence at the trial of a Maori labourer, Awherata Manuera, alias Alfred Manuel, aged 32, who appeared before Mr. Justice Blair in the Supreme Court on a charge of the theft of 20 sheep, the property of the proDi'ictor of the Totaranui Native Block AC, Jerusalem, and .subject to an instrument of security held by the Waiapu Farmers’ Co-operative Company, Limited.
His Honour, who assured the jury that its recommendation would be given the fullest 'consideration, remanded the accused to appear on Monday for sentence.
Mr. J. Siddells, Wanganui, who will be 80 years of age to-day, was presented with a shaving outfit and a box of cigars at a meeting of the Wanganui City Council as a mark of esteem and a tribute to Mr. Siddell’s virility of mind. Mr. Siddells is Deputy-Mayor of Wanganui. He retired from the police force on October B,' 1917 with the rank of detectivesergeant. He was stationed in Gisborne as a detective in pre war days.
