GISBORNE LAMB

MEAT BOARD’S CLASS BETTER THAN LAST YEAR JUDGING ON THE HOOKS TEN PENS SELECTED Quality which was an improvement on that of fast year was noticed by the judge, Mr, J. Barr, in the Meat Board's district lamb competition judged at the Kaiti freezing works yesterday afternoon. There were 47 pens, comprising 141 lambs, in the class, and the task of killing and judging was a long one. As in the class judged in the morning, the winning pen on the hoof was again the winner on the hooks, while the second on the showgrounds was fifth at the works, and the fifth on Wednesday was second yesterday. Six pens were selected for the placings, and an additional four pens, which were awarded certificates of merit, were added to make up what would have been the district’s exhibit at Smithfield had the London judging not been abandoned on account of the war.

The Placings

The first 10 pens are shown in the following table, in which is given the weights of the lambs and the placings on the hoof and on the hooks:—

“The quality was better than last year,” commented the judge on the hooks, “but they have not killed out as they handled in the pens on the showground, lacking in many cases covering on the legs and also showing signs of legginess.” A number of interested farmers followed the judging. In some quarters it was suggested that the reason for the legginess this year, which was more pronounced than in recent seasons, might have been a tendency on the part of producers to use inferior rams, but on the other hand some farmers who had selected their rams with care, and even some who had used pedigree rams had suffered in the same manner.
