ROWING SEASON
FIRST TRIAL FOURS GISBORNE CLUB RACING Racing commenced last evening in the Gisborne Rowing Club’s first trial fours of the season over the threequarter mile course on the Taruheru River. Eight crews have been entered in the trials In the first race M. Burridge (str.), J. Hankey (3), L. Osmond (2), R. Taylor (bow) beat A. Allen (str.), K. Ford (3), T. Bolton (2), I. Menzies (bow), by 1| lengths. The start was even, but thereafter Burridge’s crew settled down well, and gradually drew ahead to a two-length lead. Allen challenged in the final sprint to reduce the deficit by half a length.
The second race resulted in a win for J. Gemmell (str.), T. Williams (3), L. Franks (2), F. Henry (bow), who defeated A. Terry (str.), G. Owen (3), T. Moughan (2), and W. Hoy (bow). Gemmell took his crew away to an excellent start, and there was clear water between the boats at the footbridge. Terry's crew settled down well, but could not make any impression on GemmeH’s substantial lead, and Gemmell won comfortably.
To-night R. Mahon (str.), R. Walter (3), J. Wilkins (2), P. Berry (bow), will race against L. Winstanley (str.), T. Puddick .(3), S. Duncan (2), and a substitute. Gemmel and Burridge's crews will also row, and the winner of the race will be in the final. To-morrow morning S. Allen (str.), C. Armstrong (3), R. Ogilvie (2), ,T. Francis (bow) will row C. McLernon (str.), W. Bright (3), L. Ellmers (2), T. Bright (bow).
