WAIROA CARNIVAL
ENTHUSIASM DISPLAYED MAORI CANDIDATE (Special to the Herald.) WAIROA, this day. The campaign of the Maori candidate in the Wairoa queen carnival, Miss Isobel Macgregor, which had been practically at a standstill since the outbreak of war, was recommenced with renewed vigour during the week-end, when at a well-attended meeting of her supporters, a strong central committee was elected, and a programme for the future discussed.
At the commencement of the meeting Mr. A. T. Carrol!, who presided, spoke enthusiastically of the worthiness of the cause for which they were working, and to which the funds from the queen carnival would be devoted. He said that though their candidate might not be elected, yet it was up to the Maori people to show their European brothers that they were going to fight hard, and do their best to assist in the raising of funds.
Other speakers spoke on similar lines and it was unanimously decided to form a central executive, the following being elected:—Patron, Mr. G. C. Ormond; chairman, Mr. A. T. Carroll; secretary, Mrs. J. Macgregor; treasurers, Mesdames H. Lindsay and E. F. Pickering; committee, Mesdames A. T. Carroll, W. Adsett, M. Burridge, Watene Winiata, Messrs. Dick McGregor, J. Macgregor, Revs. H. Northcroft, W. Huata, T. Pohatu, Messrs. P. Kcma and T. Raketi.
Mr. T. Carroll was appointed to represent the Waitua, Nga Matanga and Kahungunu districts.
