MOTU TENNIS

OPENING OF SEASON CLUB'S ANNUAL MEETING (Herald Correspondent.) The annual meeting of the Motu Tennis Club, which was held recently in the pavilion, was well attended. The retiring president. Mr. N. G. Nisbett, presided, and reported on the general success of the past season, and said that the financial position was very satisfactory. Mr. Nisbett, and the secretary, Mr. J. Peddle, did not seek re-election. Mr. A. C. Stratford was appointed president, and Mr. D. Doole secretary. It was decided to let the contract for the top-dressing of the second court immediately. Yankee Tournament Weather conditions were not good Cor tennis during the weed-end. the sky being overcast, and a chill wind blowing from the south. However, a large number of enthusiasts gathered at the Motu club’s courts, where a Yankee tournament was arranged for the opening.

There were players from Matawai, Koranga, Rakauroa, Otoko and Motuhora, and while some of the sets were being played the onlookers adjourned to a neighbouring field, and kept warm by entering into a vigorous game of rounders. Luncheon and afternoon tea were provided and at the conclusion of play Mr. A. C. Stratford, the president, made a happy speech and presented the trophies to the winning couple. Mr. Stratford also announced that Mr. R. F. Jackson had presented a handsome rosebowl, to be called the M. E. Jackson Memorial Bowl, and to be competed for annually by the hill country clubs in inter-club matches. Mr. Jackson was accorded a hearty vote of thanks for his gift.

In the semi-finals of the tournament A. Crozier and Miss E. Tombleson beat H. Bissenden and Mrs. H. C. Boys; and L. Rehu and Miss J. Boys defeated R. F. Jackson and Mrs. W. F. Robb. A heavy shower of rain prevented the final being played, the contestants agreeing to draw for the trophies, which were won by A. Crozier and Miss Tomblcson.
