GOOD PERFORMANCES

The Poverty Bay Central Homing Pigeon Society has been fortunate this season with the weather, for favourable conditions have existed for nearly all the events to date. As a result the birds have made some good velocities and the most recent events included a further series of good performances. A race was conducted from Woodville on Saturday over an airline distance of 166 miles. The birds were liberated at noon, and, assisted by a south-easterly wind, the winner. M. Royde's Aussie, was timed in at 3.36 p.m.. recording a velocity of 1347.4yds per min. The results in detail were: M. Royde’s Aussie, 1347.4yds per min., 1: T. Crosby's Johnny. 1345.3yd5. 2: D. Somei'vill’s bird, 1342.7yd5, 3; J. McLean’s bird, 1341.3yd5, 4; R. Hall’s Desert Eagle, 1340.8yd5. 5; A. O’Neill’s bird, 1338.6yd5. 6; C. W-aldock’s bird, 1336.1yd5, 7; A. McLauchlan’s bird. 1333.4yd5, 8. In the junior single-up race from Napier the pigeons were liberated at intervals of five minutes. C. Waldock's Red Wings was first, with a velocity of 1464.6yds per min. The other placed birds were: C. Waldock's Swifty, 1324.8yds per min.. 2: M. Quinn’s Dusty. 1324.6yd5, 3; D. McLean’s Little Wonder. 1250.8yd5, 4. -Next week the old bird championship will be flown from Wellington, an airline distance of 250 miles.
