DISORDERLY AND DRUNK

WAIROA PROSECUTION

(.Special tn the Herald.) WAIROA, this day

Charged with being disorderly while drunk in a public place, Hunia George Grey, aged 23, a Maori, appeared before Mr. J. Corkill, J.P., in Hie Wairoa Police Court on Saturday and was convicted and lined £l, in default 48 hours’ im prisonmen t. The accused pleaded guilty.

Sergeant D. Clark told the court that on Friday the accused came into town and had more liquor than was good for him. He picked a quarrel with a taxi proprietor, and when another Maori endeavoured to pacify him the accused ‘‘took to him.” The police approached the accused and spoke to him, and everything seemed to be all right. Some time later, however. the accused went looking for the taxi proprietor to settle with him.

The sergeant added that the accused was one of those men who, when he took liquor, wanted to fight the world. He look no heed of the warning given by the police, but came back looking for more.

Addressing Hie accused, Mr. Corkill said that when a person acted in a disorderly manner the pubjic had to be protected.
