INSTALLATION OF LEADER GENERAL CARPENTER Elected general by the High Council in August, the new Australian-born leader of the Salvation Army, General George Carpenter, was installed in office in London on Wednesday. Having served in Australia, England, South America and Canada, where he was stationed in command at the time of his election, General Carpenter is ihe first overseas-born leader-to take charge.
The first three generals of the Salvation Army were Englishmen, and were stationed in England at the time of assuming office. Miss Evangeline Booth, who became the fourth leader, was born in England, but was commander in America when elected. General Carpenter was born in New South Wales, and he is well known in New Zealand. For many years General Carpenter has been a writer of note, being the international head of the Salvation Army’s literary department. He is a man of great understanding, and has travelled in many parts of the world. Mrs. Carpenter, also an Australian, is one of the most talented women in the service of the Salvation Army,
