BRITISH RETAIL TRADE FIRST MONTH OF WAR (British Official Wireless.) Reed. 11 a.m RUGBY, Nov. 2. The effect of the war on retail trade is examined in the Board of Trade journal which publishes the September statistics prepared by the Bank of England. The money value of daily sales reported in that month was 13.9 per cent higher in 1939 compared with 1938. The increase amounted to 20 per cent or more in four provincial areas of England and Wales and to 12.3 per cent in Scotland.

In contrast to the province.;, however, London, where trade is- adversely affected by the evacuation of the population, transport difficulties, and other factors, showed a considerable drop of 27.4 per cent and a small rise of 1.9 per cent in the suburban areas.
