OPPOSED TO SMUTS

MALAN AND HERTZOG PARTIES MAY MERGE REPUBLIC AS AIM (Reed. Nov. 3, 10.15 a.m.) CAPETOWN, Nov. 2. Dr. P. F. Malan, leader of the South African Nationalist group, in a speech at Paarl, announced that negotiations were proceeding for the amalgamation of his party and the followers of the former Prime Minister, General J. B. Hertzog.

Dr, Malan stated that he was prepared to serve under General Hertzog's leadership.

The Capetown Times points out that Dr. Malan would be unlikely to give a pledge to serve under General Hertzog without the latter’s assurance that he intended to continue actively to oppose the Prime Minister, General J. C. Smuts, and therefore it seems only a matter of time before the supporters of Dr. Malan and of General Hertzog become a united Nationalist Party, whose ultimate object would be a South African republic.
