BEACH IMPROVEMENT
PIONEERING EFFORTS SOCIETY’S GOOD WORK HIGH PRAISE OFFERED A high tribute to the pioneering work of the Waikanae Beach Improve, ment Society in providing amenities at the Waikanae Beach was paid by the Deputy-Mayor, Mr. J. H. Hall, in addressing the twenty-first annual meeting of the society last even-' ing.
Mr. Hall presided over the meeting in the absence of the Mayor, Mr. D. W. Coleman, M.P., and there was a fair attendance of members. “As the pioneer movement in providing the amenities that now exist at the beach the society is deserving of great praise.” declared Mr. Hall, in taking the chair. He also referred to the pioneers' struggle to arouse the civic pride of the townspeople. “Now that civic pride has been raised to a high mark and it has been largely as a result of the work of those pioneers, whose names will long live in our memory,” added the speaker.
Through the work of the society, with the aid in recent times of the Beautifying Society, the Thirty-Thous-artd Club and Waikanae Park Development committee much interest being taken 'in the beach, which, he leu sure, was on the eve' of great velopment. He could visualise Gisborne being placed on the map as one of the leading pleasure resorts of the North Island The annual report, already published in the Herald, and the balance sheet were adopted on the motion ol Mr. A. J. Nicol, seconded by Mr. I. Todd, the latter oointing out that although the bathing shed receipts were much lower the position of the society was well ahead of that o. the previous year. Morse; hon. auditor, Mr. C. G. Picsse; non. solicitor, Mr. D. Kinder; hon. treasurer. Mr. E. T. Chrisp; lion, secretary, Mr. A. S. Jamison; trustees, Messrs. T Adair and A. J. Nicol; committee. Drs. A. L. Singer and H. Goulding Rice; Mesdames M. Keany, A. L. Singer,, W. A. Bowie. P. Aylward, G. H. Scents, F.,R. Hill, A. Jamison, K. Harris, J. S. Buck land, and A. Bradfleld; Messrs. T. Todd, G. H. Sceats, G. T. Maunder, R. Morse, T Wauchop, James Chrisp, J. Slipper, R. J. Eastwood, and F. R. Hill. Several speakers made eulogistic reference to the valuable work performed by the officers during the past vear. Mr. Nicol referred to the departure from the district of Mr. H. F. Forster and said that he desired to place on record the good work periormed by Mr. Forster over a large number of years. The fact that the attendance at the last committee meeting was .larger than that at the annual meeting ot the society was commented upon by Mr. Nicol, who said that the well attended committee meetings had ensured that the affairs of the society were well looked after. A general discus; ion ensued on the activities of the society and the possibility of further improvements being made at tire beach in the near future. Voter of thanks were passed to Mr. M. ft. Fry for auditing the accounts, and to the chair.
