POLICE PROMOTION
INSPECTOR DEMPSEY FURTHER RECOGNITION CHARGE AT WANGANUI Many Gisborne people will learn with satisfaction of the promotion of Sub-Inspector J. A. Dempsey, Wellington, to the full rank of Inspector of Police. Mr. Dempsey was stationed in Gisborne a few years ago, and. while here made many friends among the public. He is now to take charge of the Wanganui police district, in succession to Inspector Lander, who is retiring this month. Wanganui is regarded as one of the more important provincial districts of the Dominion, as is indicated by the fact that its present police head holds the rank of superintendent. Inspector Dempsey came to Gisborne as a sergeant, having previously served in Dunedin, Wellington, the Bay of Islands and Auckland. At that time his name was associated with many incidents on the waterfronts of Auckland and Wellington, and he had the reputation of being unusually tactfu.', but decisive in action" when persuasion failed. During his service in Gisborne the public had occasion only to recognise his gift of taetfulness, especially iri handling sports crowds. No police officer had a better band in dealing with the public in large numbers.
In 1928 Mr. Dempsey was appointed senior-sergeant and was transferred to Hastings. Later he was transferred again to Wellington, where he has spent the past nine years. During the tour of the Duke of Gloucester in 1935, he was one of the senior officers of the oolice party which accompanied His Royal Highness, and for his services he received the Royal Victorian. Medal.
