TRACK & STABLE
STEWARDS’ FAVORITE SHIPPED TO RICCARTON TWO RACES IN VIEW WHANG ARE! RIDERS By "Trenton” The ruling favourite for the Stewards’ Handicap at Riccarton, Beaulivre, was shipped south on Tuesday evening from Wellington. Present intentions of his connections arc that he will run in the Stewards' and the Derby. Few horses have been successful in these two events, but that is accounted for by the few that start in both. Stepniak won the Stewards’ with 7.1 f) and went on to win the Derby, in which lie beat the New Zealand Clip winner, St. Hippo. Bon Revo and Stardancer dead-heated in the Stewards’ and the former won the Derby. Since then Derby winners have not been runners in the Stewards’ Han di c ap.
Brilliant Sprinter
Rakahanga will be troublesome to the favourite Beaulivre in the Stewards’ Handicap. She is being taken along by easy .stages, with one race at Hastings, and another at Trentham, where she ran third. Rakahanga is a brilliant mare, and last January at Trentham she won the Telegraph Handicap by four lengths in 1.1 Orf, time which is seldom beaten on the track. Among the unplaced lot were Smoke Screen, Oratory. Paper Slipper, i Black Thread and Millie. Rakahanga 'actually meets Paper Slipper lib. better as a result of their form in the intervening 12 months. She was a winner over six furlongs on the third day of the cup meeting last November, after falling in the Stewards’ when in a handy position. Failed To Run On Disdain lias furnished into a line, robust four-year-old lilly, and is slated to have looked particularly well when produced on the final day at Trentham. She was handy with the leaders until well inside the final furlong, but then dropped into fourth place at the finish. Disdain retains her speed, but at present docs not carry it far enough. Got Solid BackingSleeveless carried more money in the Nainai Handicap than any other horse started in a handicap decided during the three days at Trentham. Probably some of it was unloaded money, but it went close to being a winning bet. Sleeveless does not fill the eye as something outstanding in the way of a horse, but is, in fact, a rather plain sort of a filly. She is by Valkyrian—Chivalry by Gay LadLady Talbot, by Pilgrims Progress— | Lady Lillian, by Phaeton—Lady Zetland.
Successful Three-year-olds
Three-year-olds have a good record in the Stewards’ Handicap at Riccarton. They include Clanranald 8.5, Stepniak 7.10, Royal Artillery 7.10, Machine Gun 8.9, Gold Crest 8.3. Bon Revc 8.0, Stardancer 0.7, Warstep 0.131, Eulalie 8.1. Autopay 7.2. and Paper Slipper 8.5, who were all successful, and if every wagering is a guide, it appears as if Beaulivre will add further to the list. Jockeys For Whangarei Riding engagements announced for the Whangarei Racing Club’s spring meeting, to be held next Friday and Saturday, are as follow: —C. G. Goulsbro, Tip Toes, Philcourt, Dauber, Lady Fox; R. E. Horne, Solitary, Maxarn, Saecone, High Crown, Miss Valerie; R. Hatweil,, Romani, Penzance; J. Forsyth, Hunter’s Rose; F. Cleaver, Bachelor King (hurdles), Gay Movie, Gamos; G. Smith, First Gold Money; F. Beguely, Milanion; T. Williams, Land Girl; D. Craddock, Imperator; G. Cameron, Odtaa. Horses For lliccarton The following horses were shipped from Wellington for Riccarton on Tuesday night:—Arctic King, Beaupartir, Old Surrey, Raeburn, Sceptre, Sudan, Sleeveless, Anita Foe, Great Legion, Miss Hallomet, Verey Lights, Classform, and Duncannon. S. Reid was to have taken his team south, but he postponed his departure till tonight because of the weather. Yours Truly went last night, and 11. Telford will go on to-night with Enrich, Globe Trotter and Dainty Sue. Out Of Hack Class Like all horses owned and trained by Mr. G. D. Beatson, Sternchase has been given ample time to develop and he was one of the best hacks seen at Trentham last week. He is now in open company, but that will not prevent him from winning many more races. Incidentally, he will be able to run in the Spring Plate at Riccarton, as he did not place himself out of hacks till the day after the date of entry. In this race he will have 8.2, or 171 b. less than he won with at Wellington. Retains His Speed The latest track efforts of Trilliarch clearly indicate that the Tea Tray gelding has lost none of his speed, lie also looks all the better lor his two outings at Ellerslie, and if taken to the Whangarei meeting, where he figures on the minimum in the Manaia Handicap, he should put up a creditable showing. Has the Ability Although Bisquil failed to race as well as expected at the Ohinemuri meeting, he has done well since. He shaped attractively in a school of four flights of hurdles on Thursday morning, and as most of the horses opposed to him in the hurdle races at Whangarei have no credentials, his prospects appear bright. Bisquil did not take long to make good as a hurdler, and when lie becomes thoroughly seasoned be tier deeds can be expected of him.
