EXCEPTION TAKEN

ADDRESS ON RUSSIA

PICTURES ON SUNDAY

PERMISSION NOT GIVEN

BOROUGH COUNCIL QUERY

Questions were asked at a meeting of the Gisborne Borough Council last night regarding an address on Russia, accompanied by the screening of a motion picture, which was given in the Majestic Theatre on Sunday night.

In reply to Cr. H. E. Maude, Mr. D. W. Coleman, M.P., ‘staled that the council gave permission for an address to be given but did not sanction the screening of a picture.

Cr. G. Bradley Smith said that if the correspondence appearing in the press were correct, it was unfortunate that permission should have Dcen given for the address to be given at all. The pictures were the less objectionable part of the gathering.

The Mayor said it had been said that this was a most inopportune time for such a lecture to have been given.

Cr. Smith said there was no objection to a legitimate lecture, but if the address was so much of a tirade against the British Government it should not be allowed. He was very sorry indeed that permission was given.

The Mayor: One can be wise after the went.

Cr. J. 11. Hall: We could not have stopped it, at any rate, because admission was by invitation only. He added that he was not present at the gathering.

The discussion terminated without any resolution being passed.
