CZECH ANNIVERSARY
FATAL DEMONSTRATION CLASHES WITH POLICE , (Reed. Oct. 30, noon.) LONDON, Oct. 28. The Amsterdam correspondent of he Exchange Telegraph Agency reports that the Gestapo took special precautionary measures throughout Bohemia and Moravia on. the anniversary of the creation of the Czech republic.
The Czech National Committee appealed to all Czechs to commemorate the anniversary by wearing black ties and abstaining from alcohol and tobacco.
The Prague representative of the British United Press says that despite the German ban, the Czechs nriously observed the anniversary. Several clashed with the police, reulting in many arrests. Four Persons Killed Further reports from Prague state that four persons were killed and many injured and 800 were arrested following the German-Czech clashes during the celebrations. Shots were heard in several sections of the city during the night. The demonstrations lasted until dawn. The German police placed a cordon round Wencelas Square to prevent demonstrations. This did not prevent Czechs, wearing national colours and “Masaryk caps,” breaking through and collecting in front of the town hall. The police tried to tear oil the insignia, this resulting in frequent fights between Czech townspeople and German Brown Shirts. Police, aided by the Czech state police, finally dispersed the crowds.
