FUR STOCKS LOW
POSITION IN AUCKLAND NEW IMPORT SCHEDULES “It will be bunny from now on,” was the general comment in the Auckland fur trade in discussing the ban on all types of fur skins in the new irnoort schedules. It was stated 'hat existing stocks would be suflicient for a time, but thereafter manufacturers who were able to keep going would have to make up such types of fur as were obtainable in New Zealand. Apart from rabbit, the trade would have to depend on fitch or South Island ferret, and opossum. One leading manufacturer expressed the view that the ban probably would result in 10(10 persons being thrown out of work in New Zealand before long. Stocks were already low through the restrictions previously imposed. Another manufacturer considered that his stocks of fur skins would probably be sufficient for the coming season, but no longer. He pointed out that not only were skins in short supply, but linings and other materials required in mat ing up fur coats were equally difficult to obtain, as the importation of the qualities used by the >rade also had been prohibited.
A meeting of fur manufacturers in Auckland will be held to discuss the situation.
