POLICY IN INDIA
BRITAIN’S SINCERITY DOMINION STATUS AIM MINISTER’S WARNING SUPPORT FOR VICEROY (Elec. Tel. Copyright—United Press Assn.) (Reed Oct. 27. 3 p.m.) LONDON. Oct. 26. The Lord Privy Seal. Sir Samuel Hoare, in the House of Commons, emphasised the sincerity of the British Government’s Indian policy during the debate on the Viceroy’s statement, and declared that any difficulties preventing Dominion status had not emanated from Britain. They were inherent in the many divisions, classes and communities of the great sub-continent.
The Indians should aim at their removal. for which reason it is impossible for Britain to give up responsibilities in the minorities. If the issue became one of non-co-operation, the Gp vernment’s policy would be carried out with efficiency, strength and justice, giving the Viceroy the fullest support.
A report from Madras says that the Legislative Assembly by 153 votes to 22 passed a resolution of disapproval of the Viceroy’s declaration with an amendment proposed by a member of the Indian Congress Party expressing confidence in the Ministry and approval of its intention to resign as a protest against the declaration.
Members of the Muslim League walked out of the Assembly when the Speaker ruled out the league amendment.
