GRASS SEED EXPORT

LIFTING OF EMBARGO INTEREST IN GISBORNE Much interest is being taken by Gisborne farmers in the news that the embargo on the export of grass seed, imposed since the outbreak of the war, has been lifted, for it will mean that the usual demand should be experienced for the coming season’s crops. The opinion is expressed in Gisborne that the ban will remain lifted so long as there is no danger of a shortage of supplies for the Dominion’s own needs.

The Gisborne crop of ryegrass seed was cleaned out in quick order last season, mainly because this district was the only one in New .Zealand to have high germination certificates. The new crop, therefore, will come on to a bare Gisborne market, although it is understood that stocks are still held in other districts.

Very little seed is shipped from Gisborne now for overseas, but the retention of the export outlet will have a big bearing on the prices received by Gisborne growers, some of whom had contemplated reducing the areas for seed purposes if the export ban had not been lifted. However, it is expected that the usual areas will be shut up this year, with the possibility of there being an increase.
