READY TO OBLIGE
CHALLENGE TO “POPEYE” SEQUEL TO FIGHT (Special to the Herald.) WAIROA, this day. His willingness . to oblige Stanley Cecil Wallace, better known, according to the evidence, as “Pop-eye.” should Wallace still have any hankerings to fight with him, was expressed by George Davis in the Police Court yesterday, when, with Wallace, he appeared before Mr. J; H. Luxford S.M., charged with • fighting with Wallace in North Clyde last Saturday night.
Wallace pleaded guilty to the offence, but Davis filtered a '-plea of not guilty and conducted his own defence.
After Constable McAlpine and Sergeant Clark, had described the alleged fight, Davis went into the witness-box and gave evidence on his own behalf, interposing his evidence with some of the current slangisms of the day. Closing, his evidence, he volunteered the opinion that, as far ns he was concerned, “Pop-eye” was a “big bluff,” and that he would be willing to meet him at any time the latter wished. 'Mr.-Luxford: No doubt in some private place away from the public? Davis: Yes, any other time or-place but in view of the police. The charge against Davis was dismissed. the evidence .showing that Wallace was apparently the aggressor. The latter was convicted and fined £l.
