SAVING CIVILISATION
BRITAIN’S WAR AIM STRENGTH REQUIRED ' LORD HALIFAX'S VIEW (British Official Wireless.) Reed. 9 a.m. RUGBY, Oct. 25. Addressing the Conservative Private Members’ Committee of the House of Commons this evening, the Foreign Secretary, Viscount Halifax, described the diplomatic situation as he saw it after the first few weeks of war. Commenting in particular upon the changed situation compared with that prevailing a few months ago, he
stressed the importance of the recent Anglo-French-Turkish treaty as a stabilising influence upon the position. “Meanwhile, British strength must be reinforced at all points vital to the strategic interests of this country and, jwhen the time comes for making an honourable peace every effort should be made to create an order in which security, which is lacking now, can be established," concluded Viscount Halifax. “Britain is not fighting for any imperialistic gain, but in order to save civilisation, which is threatened in many ways.”
