RACE BETTING
A MARKED INCREASE LABOUR DAY MEETINGS LARGE CITY TURNOVERS A great increase in the amounts handled by the totalisator at the various racing and trotting meetings throughout New Zealand on Labour Day is shown by a comparison with the turnover last year. At six flat race meetings on Monday the investments totatled £187,G27 10s, while the investments at the three trotting meetings totalled £101.785 10s. In only one instance, at the Wavcrley Racing Club’s meeting, was the totalisator turnover less than last year, the decrease being £22 10s. When the investments on the Poverty Bay Hunt Club’s meeting, held on August 6 last year instead of Labour Day as was the case this year, are taken into consideration, the total increase for the nine meetings on Monday was £51,200 !os. The lota lisator turnover for these meetings this year and last year were respectively £289,803 and £238,102 10s.
The largest amount of money was handled at Trentham by the Wellington Racing Club, the turnover being £91,328 Ids. However, the Auckland Trotting Club, which put through £54,088 10s, had the largest increase of £19,033. Details are as follows:
