SWIMMING CAMPAIGN

LOCAL EFFORTS LIKELY LIFE-SAVING CONTESTS (Par Press Association.) WELLINGTON, this day. The opinion that, though successful, last year’s “lcarn-to-swim” campaign had imposed too great a strain on voluntary instructors, was expressed by delegates at the recent annual meeting of the national committee for swimming and life-saving. It is likely that in the near'future local campaigns will take the place of the national effort. The annual meeting of the Surf Life-saving Association decided to hold the 1941 championships in Otago, the actual beach to be fixed later. All future Australian teams visiting New Zealand are 'to be invited to bring a surf boat crew and a rescue and resuscitation team. The resuscitation championship is to be judged on the heats of the New Zealand four-man championship. Mr. V. L. Allan, Wellington, was appointed referee and Mr. M. Smale, Taranaki, as marshal at the 1940 championships to be held at Lyall Bay. It was recommended that the proposed visit by an Australian team for the centennial championships should be postponed. The council is to negotiate with the advisory council of the Centennial Sports Celebrations Committee concerning a grant for a possible loss at the championships and to help to defray the travelling expenses of members of competing teams. Mr. P. Coira was elected president, Mr. Gcrris vice-president, Mr. H. A. Ingram, secretary, Mr. F. H. Jackson, treasurer, Mr. P. O. Edwards as in-structor-in-chief, Mr. G. C. G. Griffiths, delegate to the Royal Life-Sav-ing Society, Mr. H. S. Feast, delegate to the Swimming Association, and Messrs. F. H. Jackson and A. Gardner delegates to the national committee for swimming and life-saving.
