FUELLING IN MEXICO
GERMAN MYSTERY SHIP
U.S. GUNBOAT PRESENT
(Reed. Oct. 26, 12 noon) 1 MANZANILLO, Mexico. Oct. 25. The German liner Havelland anchored in' the harbour simultaneously with the United States gunboat Erie. The German ship is refuelling, ostensibly to continue her voyage, but is trying to tranship cargo originally destined for the United States, indicating new sailing orders It is reported that when the Erie accosted the Havelland off Oaxaca, Mexico, the Germans hoisted the Netherlands flag, but when asked for its real flag displayed the Swastika A message from San Jose, Costa Rica, on October 11, said a steamer flying no flag apparently the German liner HavePand, of 6334 tons, disguised, was sighted off Can Velas, on the Pacific Coast, lending credence to the belief that she might have turned raider or be preparing to fuel submarines. The Havelland left Punta Arenas, Costa Rica, on October 8 with 62,000 gallons of Diesel oil on board.
