GOOD SEASON AHEAD activities commenced KEEN PUBLIC INTEREST (Special to the Herald.) WAIROA, this day. After n none too promising start, the weather in Wairoa cleared brilliantly tor the opening of the season’s activities of the Wairoa Boating Club. To mark the opening the club held a series of Labour Day opening fours and a large crowd of spectators keenly followed the fortunes of the nine crews entered. The entries received were the best for several years and augur well for a successful season. The sport is having a strong revival in Wairoa. this season and if the opening day enthusiasm is any criterion, the season should be a good one. During the afternoon a large crowd of enthusiasts followed the races from the riverbank. To stimulate the interest of schoolboys in the sport a coxswain’s race was held, this resulting in a win for a crew stroked by B. Smith. Details of the open racing are as follows: — M. Johansen (sir.), M. Doidgc, A. Clark and N. Goodlev beat M. J. Smith (str.), M. Helcan, A. Dunlop and G. Archibald by two lengths; B. IJclean (sir.), P. Poyzer, R. Thomson and L. Brown beat Trcwby (str.), Thornley, Tyrell and McKinnon by two lengths; McCorkindale (str.), E. Burrows, A. Gemmell and W. Poyzer beat Fletcher (str.), Watford, Begley, and McErlain by two lengths; Gay (str.), Eria, Munroe, and D. "Wong beat Grady, J. Foster, A. Zakris and G. Archibald Semi-final — Helean beat Hague, and M. McCorkindale beat Gay. Final. —McCorkindale beat Helean by 3ft. The season was officially opened by the vice-president, Mr. D. Glengarry, who appealed to all members to do their utmost to dace the club on a sound footing. The club captain, Mr. M. Johansen, also spoke.
