SHIVERS IN BERLIN
NO COAL FOR HEATING LIVING ON POTATOES LONDON, Oct. 6. The correspondent of The Times at Rotterdam states that the food situation in Berlin has definitely become worse during the last fortnight, and that many important categories are' now unobtainable.
“Meat, fish, and the principal forms of fat have practically disappeared,” he says, "and life has to be .maintained on a diet consisting practically of nothing but bread and potatoes. No doubt the situation, elsewhere in Germany is easier.
“Possibly the difficulties in Berlin are partly due to the transport crisis; this is certainly the case with coal. Work on the Silesian coalfield has been held up for want of, trucks. It is impossible in Berlin to Abtain supplies for domestic heating, and people are shivering miserably.”
