AUSTRALIAN SERVICE COMPULSORY TRAINING LABOUR OPPOSITION CONSCRIPTION FACTOR (Reed. Oct. 24, 9 a.m.) MELBOURNE, Oct. 24. Referring to yesterday's report from Perth quoting the statement by the Leader of the Federal Opposition, Mr. J. Curtin, that the Labour Party would regard the decision of the Commonwealth Government to re-introduce compulsory military training as a departure from the policy on which the present Parliament was elected, the Prime Minister, Mr. R. G. Menzies, said: “I believe the Government has a mandate to take the most effective steps to defend Australia and also to contribute to the success of the Empire in this war.

“The only promise made at the last election was that there should be no conscription for overseas. My Government adheres to that promise.”

The Labour Party announces that it will hold a special inter-State conference in Melbourne shortly to consider the -Prime Minister's decree. Labour officials arc at present declaring that the (Labour movement is certain to throw its whole weight against any form of compulsion of Australian youth.
