LONGEVITY EXAMPLE
DEATH OF MRS. I. TAM ATI BELIEVED TO BE I! 3 An example of remarkable longevity ended with the death on Friday ol Mrs. Iria Tamati, of Okautete, near Masterton. Mrs. Tamati, who for many years had resided in the Okautete pa, near Orui, lived to see five generations of her family, i Only an approximate estimate of her age could be made because when she was bom the white man had yet to come to the Wairarapa. It can be established, however, that the youngest son of her family of 16, Mr. Maena (Billy) Walker is 85 years of age. The late Mr. George Muir, Masterton, who died 10 years ago aged 92, knew Mrs. Tamati well and made several attempts to place the exact year of her birth. He stated on one occasion that Mrs. Tamati was undoubtedly 12 years older than him, which would make her age at death 113. Other estimates range from 112 to 118 years.
