DIVORCE DECREES
‘NOT LIKE POUNDS OF TEA’ CHIEF JUSTICE’S COMMENT Stating tint decrees for divorce were not handed out by the court like pounds of tea at a grocer’s shop, the Chief Justice, Sir Michael Myers, in the Supreme Court in Hamilton, criticised the action of a petitioner in himself serving Uio papers on the respondent. The case was one in which Jonas William- Pratt (Mr. R. W. Bennett. sought a divorce from Ethel Pratt on the ground-: of adultery. Edward Cocker, of Auckland, was named as co-iv.-'poi.ueni
"You ask me to make an order on papers which were served by petitioner himself." said V»i s Honour, "but I do not like it. My view is that the papers should be ro-serVed bv some independent person wuj could then give evidence in the proceedings." The case was held over for further consideration.
