“Wet” Canteens

Sir, Although agreeing with “Denys” in his disapproval of the Anglican Synod’s action in voicing its sanction to the establishment of "wet” canteens, 1 am not prepared to offer excuses or look on such a move with any degree of indulgence. That such a meeting should approve frankly amazes me. Their argument, “The men will got it in worse ways,” cuts little ics. Better that those who are so disposed should have to seek abroad for their refreshment than that what could amount to irresistible temptation should be put in the way of the many men who do not drink. It is ■not that, the Bacchant is in danger of further demoralisation; nor is the moderate drinker likely to suffer. Bin i think I am safe to say there are sufficient non-drinking young soldiers in our camps to warrant the Government exercising restraint in this direction. The ill effects of the “wet” canteen in the last war are still deplorably prevalent. MODERATE-DRINKING VOLUNTEER.
