WAINGAKE The Waingake Institute hold its monthly meeting on October 12, with almost a full attendance of members. A reading on Poland was given by Mrs. Gibson, and a. competition was conducted by Mrs. Jacobs.
A white (lag lilly was judged best bloom, and the best plate of biscuits was entered by Miss Wykes.
Arrangements for the birthday party next month worn finalised, and a December programme drawn up.
PUHA The Pulin Institute held its monthly meeting on October 12. There was a good attendance of members. Miss Dickon demonstrated the art of arranging 1 bowl of flowers for show purposes and was accorded a vote of thanks’. Mrs. L. Befton gave a short talk on dressmaking. The monthly competition resulted: Vase of mixed flowers. —Mrs. J, Graham, 1: All's. Ba.vly, 2: Mrs. Thompson. 3. The hostess was Mrs. Mulhollami. TUAI The Thai Institute's monthly meeting was well attended. Competition results are as follows: —Organdie novelty.—Mrs. Godman, 1; Mrs. McLeod, 2. Best bloom. —-Mrs. Xicol, 3: Airs. Hawthorne, 2; Airs. Godman, 3. .Jar of pickle.—Airs. Elian, 1. An interesting demonstration on making crepe paper novelties was given by Mrs. Bumstead, who was accorded a vote of thanks. Supper brought the evening to a close. MQTU-MOTUHORA There was a fair attendance at the October meeting of the Alotu-Alotu-hora Institute bold recently. The gathering took the form of members’ day, Airs. A. E. Legge and Mrs. G. Hutchins conducting the main business and later Mrs. p. Fisher and Airs. AY. Stewart, acting as president and secretary. Three competitions were conducted, Mrs. AY. A. AYright emerging the winner each time. It was decided to hold a sales table at the next meeting. The monthly competition resulted: Smocked garment.—Airs. A. E. Legge, 1; Mrs. AY. Stewart, 2. Afternoon tea was served by tho hostesses, Airs. X. Hey man and Mrs. G. Hutchins. TAMARAU At tho monthly meeting of the Tamarau Women’s Institute on Saturday, Mrs. 11. AY. Wallen presided over a good attendance. » Sympathy was expressed to those members who were absent through illness, and Airs. Alogford was congratulated on her recovery. Pleasure was expressed at the efforts of tho arts and crafts circle on the production of a beautiful banner. All circles reported successful gatherings. During the meeting a scrap book competition held in aid of the leper station funds resulted:—Mrs. Niven, 1; Mrs. Legg, 2; Airs. Lord, 3. Parcels were collected for the leper station. . Airs. Price and Afis.s Andrew were elected members of the institute. KOTEMAORI The fifth birthday of tho Kotemaori Institute was held at Mrs. L. Jones’ on Friday. A variety of games and competitions were thoroughly enjoyed. Airs. Cowley, a. visitor from Foxton, won the points prize for the outside competitions, others being won by Mrs. Currin and Aliss Afonteath. Brisk trade was done at tho. sale table, the proceeds of-which arc being forwarded to the leper fund. The Christmas novelty competition was judged by Airs. Cowley and Airs. MacMillan. The results were: Aliss Alonteath, l; ATi's. Haliburton, 2. During tlie afternoon a Post Office money box was presented to baby l’arsons. The monthly meeting of the gardening circle was held at Airs. Bee’s, eight members being present. Arrangements were made for the circle birthday to bo held in November. A demonstration of wool posy making was given and some cane work done by the school children was much admired. The monthly competitions for the brass howls resulted: Best bloom.—Aliss Monteath, l. Three spring bulbs.—Airs. S. Jones and Aliss Afonteath, equal, I.
WHARERATA Tho Wliarcrata Institute held its seventh birthday meeting in the Wharerata Hall. Streamers, bowls and vases of /lowers, made an effective .setting for the gardening circle meeting which was held in the morning. airs. w. McGuinnesss presided.
A paper was given on gladioli culture. Tho competition resulted. — Vase of mixed flowers.—Mrs. G. ilcAra, 1; Mrs. A. Clark, 2. After lunch the birthday meeting was opened by tho president, Mrs. O. Swarbrick, who welcomed members and visitors from tho Tikiwhata and Bartletts Institutes. Mrs. A. N. West gave a Golden Thread talk on Japan; this proved very enlightening as well as interesting.
A display of a baby’s layette made by members of the Institute is to be sent to tho Victoria League.' A cricket match, as played on board ship, was bold and was won by Mrs. French’s team by 253 to 248. A mystery parcel was won by Mrs. Glanachan, Bartletts, who exhibited a dainty tea-tray. The competition for an applirpied tea. towel resulted; Miss A. West, 1; Miss J. Bushnell, 2. Mrs. French, on behalf of tho Bartletts Institute, presented a. new library book to tile Wliarcrata Institute.
A sales table conducted by Mrs. B. Jones diil splendid business. Afternoon tea was served by the hostesses, Mrs. If. P. Bushnell, Miss ,T. Bushnell and Mrs. A. Clark, pride of place being given to a lovely birthday cake iced in pink and white and topped with seven candles.
RUATORIA The half-yearly Women's Institute council meeting, which was to have been held in Ruatoria, has been definitely postponed, according to statement at the meeting of the Ruatoria Institute. Parcels for tho Community Chest still continued to be sent forward. A number of scrap books for leper island were accepted with thanks.
An instructive demonstration on first aid was delivered by Nurse Parr, and those present found it most helpful. The bring and Iniy was very successful.
Afternoon tea was dispensed by Airs. Tod AYilliams and party.
WIGAN
The monthly mooting of the Wigan Institute was hold in Taka pan Hall, Mrs. Cmnswick presiding over a fair attendance of members.
A vote of condolence was passed with the relatives of Airs. A. D. Bartram, formerly a resident of “Wigan, who has recently passed away.
The competition for the afternoon was won bv Airs. Nelson.
The meeting closed with the singing of “O God Our Help in Ages Past.”

KOPUAWHARA The monthly mooting oL' tho Kopuawhara Institute was held in the Y.AI.C.A. j-lall. No. 3 Camp, on October 5. Airs. 'White presided. A welcome was extended to a visitor, All’s. AlcCarthy, and a new member, Airs. Hunter, was enrolled.

A demonstration of making silver paper pictures was given by Mrs. White.
* Afternoon tea was served by the hostesses, Alesdamcs Hilliard and Cummings. EARTLETTS Mrs. J. French presided over Die October meeting of the Bartletts Women’s Institute, at which there was a record attendance. It was the institute's first birthday and many visitors from Wharerata and Bartletts were present. Tho roll-call, “Hints on economising in cooking,” was well responded to. The points competition was for a balaclava, to be given to tho soldiers. Those who gained first, second and third respectively were Airs. 13. Borst, Aliss Al. Todd, and Airs. J. French. 'The remainder of the afternoon was '.spent with competitions and games and the winners were each presented with an attractive gift. Results were: Mystery parcel.—Mrs. B. Jones. Book title—Mrs. A. West; and Mrs. B. Jones. Quoits. Airs. Briffault. Lambs.—Airs. ATuir. The candle was lit by Airs. Brizzell,
tho institute’s oldest member, and the cake was cut by Airs. Swarbrick, president of tho AYharorata Women’s Institute. Mesdames King and Briffault acted as hostesses.
MATAWAI The Matawai Institute hold its meet ins; on October 11 when there was a fair attendance. A demonstration of bandaging wounds and Ilecl Cross work was given by Miss Gibson, who was accorded a hearty vote of thanks by Mrs. C. V. Smith.
Apologies were sent by Mrs. H. Burgess, and Mrs. Montgomery on account of illness in the family. The hostess was Mrs. G. Mortleman.
WAERENGA-A-HIKA The monthly meeting of the Wae-renga-a-hika Institute was held on October 17. Mrs. O'Connell presided. Four visitors were present. A vote of sympathy was passed to Mr. and Mrs. Barron in their bereavement. Members were asked to bring eggs at the next meeting, proceeds to bn forwarded to the Creche for Christmas pocket money.
A mock court was held under the jurisdiction of Mrs. Cornelius, Gisborne, which caused much amusement.
Mrs. Goodwin, Gisborne, gave a most interesting demonstration on making cushions and rugs from old felt hats. The golden thread article on “Mother India” was read by Mrs. Barrow. Christmas parcels were received for Hie lepers. Afternoon tea was served by the hostesses, Mesdames Richardson and Ingram. TE KARAKA Mrs. j. V. Castles presided over a good attendance at the October meeting of tlie Te Karaka Women’s Institute, held at the Waikohu Hall last Thursday. A letter from the secretary of the Dental Clinic Committee was read, this expressing tlie gratitude of the committee for services rendered by institute members In connection with the supper arrangements at the dental clinic ball. A notification was read to the effect that the half-yearly federation council meeting would be held on December 1 in the Parish Hall, Gisborne. Miss B. On* was appointed to act as delegate for/Te Karaka. It was decided that the roll call for November should be a remit which might bo considered suitable for presentation at a future council meeting. It was explained that the meals at tho A. and P, Show would be in charge this year of tho Poverty Bay Women's Central Representative Committee, all profits to he donated to tho Red Cross funds. Women of Poverty Bay are being asked to donate foodstuffs and a list was compiled of the various goods the institute members would contribute. A collection of eggs was made for tho Heni Materoa Children’s Home, and a parcel of Christmas gifts made up for the Makogai lepers. A “bring and buy” in aid of the funds of the federation did good business. It was decided to lisk Miss Bunty Dobson to give a display of physical culture at the November meeting. Afternoon tea was served by Mesdames H. Boniface. W. Fisher and F. Charteris.
