MAKARAKA RACES

P.B. TURF CLUB | BIRKQLOGY’S HURDLES | HACK TO NATIVE SONG i ! FINE WEATHER ' CROWDS j I Good fields, a track in almost per- I feet order, and brilliantly fine weather contributed to the success of the Pov i erty Bay Turf Club's spring meeting, j which opened at the Makaraka course | to-day. The attendance was very fair I when the first race was run and in- ; creased steadily throughout the early ; part of the afternoon. | Officers responsible .for the conduct I of the racing were: —Patron, Mr. D. .T. ; j Barry; president, Mr. F. Tolerton: I ! vice-president, Mr. W. G. Sherratt; i I hon. treasurer, Mr. W. D. Morley; | stewards, Messrs. F. B. Bousfield. J-I. ! I E. Bright. B. R. U. Burke. H. 11. Dods, ! F. C. Loisel, 11. Maude. H. Moore. W. D. Morley. R. C. Murphv. F. W. : Nolan. W. L. Rutledge, A. G. Turnj bull, T. Utting, and M. R. Moore: judge, Mr. P. A. Pettit: starter, Mr. i L. Murray: handicappcr. Mr. A. Tuck- i | well; cleric of scales, Mr. A. H. Gor- i don: clerk of course: Mr. R. O. Hine: i ! hon. timekeeper, Mr. C. O. Hansen: secretary, Mr. G. 11. Scents. Birkology Finishes Strongly 5 Birkology put up a good perform- j j ancc to win the Discovery Hurdles : Handicap and finished strongly to \ | fight off Small Boy and Whetu, who i | both looked like beating him two | jumps from home. j Whetu was prominent all through! 8 j the race, going out at the start, with I! Paul Robeson the closest of the II others, and Birkology, Dozie Boy. I j Small Boy and Whakao following in \; the order named. Whetu touched at 9 : the second fence, but lost no ground |j and the order out of the straight was J j Wlietu, Paul Robeson, Birkology, | Small Boy, Dozie Boy and Whakao, | the last named pair being a few II lengths back.

' The field bunched going round the ■ j east bend, but there was no change ' in the order and the leaders pumped ! well in the back stretch, where a j .gap again opened up between the I i last two and the others. Paul Robe- i I son shook off Whetu at five furlongs [ j and Birkology came up to second place as Whetu dropped still further j back. j At the half-mile Birkology made a | I great jump, going up alongside Paul j Robeson, but Small Boy and Whetu j \ were coming fast and they rounded j ! the bend to the straight bn terms, j j Small Bov showed in front at the | •last jump but one. with Whetu level i j with Birkology, but the last-men- | ; tioned made a fine jump at the last j ■and made up ground, easily holding; ■ his own on the run to the post. Small j Boy was second, just under two i lengths behind Birkology, and Wlietu . j third, half a length further back, j ; Paul Robeson being a close fourth, j (Time, 2min. 44 2.ssec Led All The Way ; In the Nick's Head Hack Handicap ; Native Song gave the other runners i no chance at all, getting out in front ! from the inside position at the bar- ; rier and bowling along in convincing style all the way to win by two-and-a-half lengths. Golden Flame was second after the j first half-furlong, Mendelssohn third, j | and Opoho and Reay Bridge close be- I I hind. There was no change in the | ! order round to the five-furlong post, : where Native Song had drawn out to ! a lead of two-and-a-half lengths. After j that Opoho moved up ahead of Men- j delssohn and set out after Golden j Flame.

] It was evident that only an excep- j tional run could bring any of the | others up to within striking distance jof Native Song, who went on unI troubled, even when Reay Bridge and I Opoho began to close the gap a little. I Their efforts were short-lived, however, and they merely tussled out the j ! distance for second place. | Golden Flame faded out completely ! 1 in the straight and Mendelssohn was j never dangerous. Native Song won handily, and Opoho and Reay Bridge j filled second and third places in that j order.
