CLOTHES FOR SOLDIERS
SUIT EVERY 30 SECONDS TYPICAL BRITISH FACTORY LONDON, Oct. 13. Hundreds of clothing factories are working at full pressure on the most modern mass production lines, filling army contracts. A typical factory, employing 3000 girls, turns out three battle suits every 90 seconds. The Ministry of Supply has undertaken the* world's biggest tailoring enterprise. The number of greatcoats ordered alone represents 25 years' peace-time requirements. Boot orders for a week equal 18 months’ supply for pre-war needs. The adoption last year of the new uniform involved reclothing the entire army. In the'most modern factories conveyor belt systems are making possible expanded production. The belts carry the uniforms past long lines of machinists, each of whom performs a single operation. The finished article is carefully examined to see that it conforms to rigorous army specifications ■Hundreds of girls who were unskilled before the war have now been absorbed in mass-production factories.
