THE WEATHER Last Night’s Forecast General situation: An anti-cyclone is centred to the north, while a depression is moving from the west on to the South Island. Forecast: Winds north to west prevailing, strong at times from Cook Strait southwards, with gales in some exposed positions; otherwise moderate in force; a south-westerly change possible in the far south to-morrow. Seas: In New Zealand waters, becoming rough south of Cape Egmont and about Cook Strait; slight to moderate elsewhere. Eastern Tasman Sea: Moderate to strong north-west to west winds; seas, moderate in the north, rough in the south. Weather: Rain probable in the western and southern portions of the South Island and extending gradually up western districts, possibly as far as the King Country; elsewhere fair to fine, but showers-probable later in Canterbury. Temperatures: Mild, but becoming cooler in the south. To-day’s North Island Report, There was a marked drop in the barometric pressure along the East Coast during the 24 hours ended at 9 a.m. to-day and the pressure this morning was lowest in the Wellington area. All weather stations from Cape Maria Van Diemen to Wellington reported cloudy to overcast skies, and light rain fell overnight at most points. Northerly winds predominated and a high wind was blowing at Wellington. From Napier northwards the sea was smooth to slight, but south Of Hawke’s Bay the conditions were rough. The 9 o’clock temperatures were:—Cape Palliser, (52 degrees; Cape Maria Van Diemen, Tauranga, East Cape and Napier, 59; Auckland, 58; Opotiki and Wellington 57; Gisborne, 55.
